Dancing, dance moves, and dancers on the dance floor are certainly a popular theme in pop songs, but even rock and ballads love the dance moves. Not only disco, but all genres of music have loads of songs about the art of dance. Here are our favorites that hit the Top 40 billbaord list, and most of them reached #1. We could consider all of these to be our number one pick, but we'll rank them anyway. Mirror ball fully included.
1 - You Should be Dancing by the Bee Gees hit #1 and carried the dance craze from Saturnight Fever and on... The theme was a simple one... ya shud be dancin, man.
1 -/ tie Dancing Queen by ABBA. Maybe the most overplayed dance song by the pop quartet, but it was a big hit, about a girl who is queen of the ball.
2 - Dancing on the Ceiling by Lionel Ritchie. The dance urge is continued with Mr. Ritchie who has a special way of dancing... upside down. Ahh... we miss the 80s.
3 - Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) by C & C Music Factory. One of the most recognizable dance songs of all time.
4 - Flashdance ... What a Feeling by Irene Cara from the hit movie of the same name.
5 - Last Dance by Donna Summer, a staple played every night as the last song of disco clubs for years.
6 - Batdance by Prince, for the Batman soundtrack in 1989
7 - The Hustle by Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony. Named after the popular dance move called "the hustle" in the 70s. Do the Hustle!
8 - Dance, Dance, Dance by Chic. In 1977 the band called Chic was well-known in dance clubs for LeFreak and other beat-heavy songs. This one says it all though.
9 - Tiny Dancer by Elton John
10 - Let's Dance by David Bowie. See, even rock stars love the dance.
11 - Move in the Right Direction by Gossip. Don't just move, dance that way. The right direction, forward and in step.
12 - The Loco-Motion by Little Eva and again later by Grand Funk Railroad. It's a dance move: Do the Loco-motion with me.
13 - Let's Twist by Chubby Checker, another song about a dance move, this one is called the Twist.
14 - Dance Fever by Florence & the Machine
15 - Just Dance by Lady Gaga (2008)
16 - Dance Away by Roxy Music
17 - Hips Don't Lie by Shakira (2005)
18 - Mashed Potato Time! by Kal Mann and Bennie Lowe from 1962, this is about a dance move called... you got it, the Mashed Potato.
19 - The Politics of Dancing by Re-Flex
20 - Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen. That dance move is not G-rated and best left to the imagination.
