Meat Loaf was an intrepid performer in the 70s, 80s, 90s and on. He passed away on January 20, 2022 and his absence is already felt. He gave us a lot of good songs, sometimes as Eddie in Rocky Horror and sometimes as himself, Meat Loaf aka Meatloaf on occasion. In collaboration with Jim Steinman, he gave us some of the longest songs with certainly the longest titles. More important, he gave us good tunes. Here are the Top2040 staff's picks for best and most influential Meat Loaf songs.
- Bat Out of Hell - The title track from his 1977 LP, possibly his most influential album. It was long, storied, and brilliant.
- You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (On a Hot Summer Night) - who can forget that opening: "Would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?"
- Hot Patootie, Bless My Soul from the Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack. It sizzled through the 70s like the lightning above the Frankenstein place. Meat played the part of Eddie both on stage and in the film.
- Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through - one of the best videos of the 90s.
- Objects in the Rearview Mirror (May Appear Closer Than They Are) - beautiful and haunting
- I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) - his first #1 hit single
- Life Is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back - poetic and true!
- Two Out of Three Ain't Bad, Meat Loaf's first big single that started it al, it hit peaked at #11.
- Razor's Edge - an underappreciated song from the LP Midnight at the Lost and Found.
- Paradise by the Dashboard Light
- Heaven Can Wait
- Read 'Em and Weep
- Fallen Angel - a sweet but forgotten song from Midnight at the Lost and Found.
- Nowhere Fast, from the soundtrack to Streets of Fire, an 80's classic.
- For Crying Out Loud - another long tune telling a story from Bat Out of Hell
- Left in the Dark, written by Jim Steinmen, a version by Barabar Streisand was also released .
- Dead Ringer for Love, performed with Cher
- Peel Out, fast and furious and totally Meat
- Blind Before I Stop
- Dead Ringer for Love - another song performed with Cher.
Honorable Mention:
I'd Lie for You (And That's the Truth) - written by Diane Warren, duet with Patti Russo
There are dozens more, but the list cannot be infinite. Meat Loaf will be missed. Perhaps he's gone on to Transylvania with others from the past. Rock on. Rock until our dreams come through.
