The legend of the werewolf goes back hundreds of years. If a man transforms into a wolf creature when the full moon rises.... We've become obsessed by werewolves in film, especially during the last decade. A lot of bad movies have been made in the werewolf genre, but a few good werewolf moves have surfaced from the rubble. Here are the top 25 Werewolf movies of all time:
1 - The Howling (1981) A TV news reporter is sent to investigate serial murders in a remote community, and finds more than she expected. Very effective, brilliantly executed on film.
2 - The Wolf Man (1941) The original is still spooky and the story stands out, even with dated effects.
3 - An American Werewolf in London (1981) the John Landis benchmark film.
4 - Silver Bullet (1985) based on a Stephen King story. A boy in a wheelchair is dogged by a werewolf, and his sister must help him track it down.
5 - Dog Soldiers (2002) Military exercises in Scotland turn bad when creatures attack them.
6 - Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups, 2001) In 18 th century France, hunters are sent to find a beast responsible for hundreds of killings.
7 - Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) the ancient feud between aristocratic Vampires and lower class Lycans.
8 - Ginger Snaps (2000) One of 2 sisters is bitten by a werewolf, and they must deal with it.
9 - Le Poil de la Bête (2010) French Canadian film that takes place in 1665 France. Good werewolf movie, great story!
10 - Skinwalkers (2006) two packs of werewolves fight to the death over a young boy who can break the curse.
11 - An American Werewolf in Paris (1997) students in Paris behave badly.
12 - Wolf (1994) Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer.
13 - The Howling V: Rebirth (1989) retelling of "The Beast Must Die"... or Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" with a werewolf.
14 - Cursed (2005) in Modern L.A. 3 people come together to kill the werewolf that bit them.
15 - Bad Moon (1996) an under-appreciated werewolf movie with some gory scenes and a good story.
16 - Lobos De Arga, aka Game of Werewolves (2011) A small town in Spain is filled with werewolves.
17 - Red Riding Hood (2011) new spin on the old tale.
18 - The Beast Must Die (1973) whodunnit mystery; one of the guests at a secluded estate is a werewolf, and the guests are dying one by one.
19 - Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943) yes it's black & white... get over it! The movie is fantastic.
20 - Werewolf Fever (2009) Dark comedy/horror about a werewolf who attacks a drive-in diner.
21 - Monster Squad (1987) a group of kids take on the Universal Monsters to save the world.
22 - The Wolf Man (2010) Remake of the 1941 classic, this time with Anthony Hopkins.
16 - Wolfen (1981) A New York cop tracks a series of murders to find a beast at the heart of it.
23 - Teen Wolf (1985) Michael J. Fox is a werewolf in high school.
24 - Twilight: Eclipse (2010) the wolf pack saves the movie.
25 - Blood and Chocolate (2007) a teen werewolf chick is torn by her love for a human man.
Honorable Mention: Van Helsing (2004) the famous vampire hunter goes to Transylvania to kill Dracula, but finds a werewolf in his path. This is a "vampire" movie but does have a cool werewolf.
Curse of the Werewolf (1961) is a close runner up.
