America has had a long love affair with the car. We love to drink slushies on the open road, waste gas, and listen to our tapes (er, I mean mp3's) while cruisin' up Main Street or down the highway. There's no shortage of "car songs" in our pop/rock history, so we picked out the coolest vehicular songs of all time. Here are the top 20 songs about cars.
20 - Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin
19 - Pink Cadillac by Bruce Springsteen, a staple hit from 1984
18 - '92 Subaru by Fountains of Wayne
17 - Little Deuce Coupe by The Beach Boys
16 - Jaguar by the Who
15 - 4WD by Jethro Tull
14 - Lowrider by War
13 - Chevrolet by Foghat
12 - Big Wheels by ELO, Electric Light Orchestra from the Out of the Blue LP
11 - I Can't Drive 55 by Sammy Hagar
10 - The Car Wash by Rose Royce, theme song to the movie of the same name.
9 - SS 396 by Paul Revere and the Raiders, who also did the promo song for the Pontiac GTO commercials in 1969 and 1970
Forget about your Hemi's and your GTO's ...I've got a new machine, and she really goes.
8 - Drive by The Cars
7 - Paradise by the Dashboard Light by Meatloaf
6 - Drive My Car by the Beatles, the oldest #1 Billboard song on the list.
5 - Red Barchetta by Rush
4 - Cars by Gary Numan, an early new wave chart topper.
3 - Behind the Wheel by Depeche Mode, a fast 80s hit with lots of verve.
2 - Little Red Corvette by Prince … baby you're much too fast, because Prince always delivers the motored goods.
1 - I'm in Love with My Car by Queen from the A Night at the Opera album, ironically not from the CD: A Day at the Races. Clearly the best car song ever written. Roger Taylor says it all in his anthem for the engine.
It was suggested to include Bob Segar's "Like a Rock" since it has been on millions of truck commercials, but it isn't really about cars or trucks. It's a sell-out song, so... no dice.
Honorable Mention to: Midnight Ride by Styx from the Equinox LP, and the song Jeepster by T-Rex, a hit back in 1971 for our list of best car songs.
