The Best Comedy Movies and Parodies for Your Halloween Parties or Halloween Movie Night
Scary movies are what make Halloween great fun, but we need to laugh sometimes too. Here is a list of the best comedies to watch for Halloween, and they are appropriate for all ages. The jokes are still witty, even after several years, and most of these can be watched over and over. These are the top Comedy DVD picks for your next light-hearted Halloween party.
1 - The Lost Boys (1987) One of the all-time classic horror/comedies of all time. It's about vampire youth, and has some of the best lines of any movie. The Frog brothers (Corey Feldman, Jamison Newlander ) are especially entertaining. This is one of many 80s comedies Corey Haim helped make successful.
2 - Young Frankenstein (1974) Gene Wilder and Marty Feldman made this a brilliant comedy spoof of Frankenstein. It has an all-star cast, including Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman and Peter Boyle. Don't pass it up.
3 - Army of Darkness (1992) starring Bruce Campbell, this is the 3rd in the Evil Dead series. Nicely done, and sarcastically witty.
4 - Newhart episode: Take me to your Louden (1987) The 87 Halloween Episode of the Newhart TV Series (starring Bob Newhart) was one of the funniest 25 minutes of comedy on TV. The small Vermont town falls for a replay of the War of the Worlds radio broadcast and believe it's real. They are convinced Dick Louden (Bob Newhart) is the alien mastermind behind it. Extraordinarily funny.
5 - Ghostbusters (1984) Bill Murray is a genius, and so is Ivan Reitman. There are some classic comedy moments here, including the scene with the ghost in the library. Rent this DVD and see it again, it's still entertaining.
6 - The Ghost and Mr. Chicken (1966) Don Knots gives us a very amusing performance in a well written movie. I know it's old, but give it a try!
7 - Once Bitten (1985) An early Jim Carey movie that usually gets forgotten. It's one of his best movies, and is very suitable for a Halloween movie party.
8 - Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein (1948) Some classics just keep coming back. Introduce this movie to your kids, and they'll enjoy it.... if they can get past the black and white (a stigma most kids have today).
9 - Serial Mom (1994) Kathleen Turn was the prefect mom, except for her serial killer habits. A funny parody.
10 - Shaun of the Dead (2004) An interesting comedy spoofing Dawn of the Dead. The only entry on our list that might not be appropriate for all ages, but funny and worth a DVD rental.

In the honorable mention ring, we have: "Scary Movie" which did have a few good jokes, but not many. It was a near miss. "Beetlejuice" was also fun, and deserves 1 viewing, if you haven't already seen it. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" should at least be mentioned, but I don't think I could watch it again. It was presented to me 400 times in my youth. Any episode of the Munsters and Addams Family TV shows will also be good for your party. Have a good spooky season and comedy Halloween movie marathon!
