The leaves are changing, and there's a chill in the air. Autumn has arrived too fast. The Fall season is a dreary time of year, so you need a few movies to pick up your spirits. Get together with friends or family, and arrange a movie night to boost your mood. Popcorn is mandatory.
These are the top 15 movies for Autumn:
- The October Man (1947) great Fall thriller about a man who finds a newly acquainted girl murdered. He has no alibi, and he has suffered a head injury.
- Halloween (1978) John Carpenter's classic movie is an obvious Fall festival film. Ok, maybe not for the whole family, but it's a great horror film for late at night when the kids are tucked in bed.
- Harold and Maude (1971) fantastic dark comedy that takes place in the Fall, both literally and metaphorically. A high school kid falls in love with an elderly woman who teaches him about life.
- Planes, Tranes and Automobiles (1987) Here's one for the whole family. Steve Martin and John Candy try to get home for Thanksgiving with their families. Good comedy!
- Back to School (1986) Rodney Dangerfield comedy about a rich man who goes back to college to inspire his son. Very funny and sarcastic, a must-see comedy that starts in the Fall.
- October Sky (1999) Jake Gyllenhaal plays a rocket enthusiast inspired by the Sputnik launch.
- Election (1999) Fall season is time to think about elections, and this comedy pokes fun at the US election process.
- Pieces of April (2003) Here April is a girl's name, not a month, and she invites her estranged family to her slum apartment for Thanksgiving dinner.
- First Monday in October (1981) Walter Mathau stars in this comedy about the first woman on the Supreme Court.
- The Winds of Autumn (1976) well-directed western.
- Killer Eye: Halloween Haunt (2011) Comedy about 5 college girls at an autumn slumber party. An alien eye crashes their party and wreaks havoc. Full Moon entertainment has hit rock bottom, but it's a fun flick.
- Dead Leaves (2004) Japanese sci-fi action movie about 2 strangers who wake up on Earth with no recollection of how they got there, but it's obvious they're not human.
- Legends of the Fall (1994) Remember this one, when Brad Pitt and really long hair?
- Autumn (2009) fairly haphazard post-apocalyptic movie based on the David Moody novel, but if you're a fan of the genre, it deserves a viewing.
- Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983) based on the Ray Bradbury novel. In the Fall season, a circus comes to town and brings a new evil with it. It's horror, but it's rated G and appropriate for the family to watch together.
Fall is the time for snuggling up with a good DVD. There's enough Autumn in there for a good seasonal movie double-feature.
